Quick Tip: Using a Torque Wrench on Firearms

Brownells, Inc.

In today's quick tip, we're discussing the proper use of torque wrenches, particularly when installing an AR15 barrel nut.

Key Points Covered:

Proper Orientation: It's proper practice to have your torque wrench set up at a 90degree angle to the tool. This ensures accurate torque application. If the angle is less than 90 degrees, the actual torque applied will be greater, and if it's more than 90 degrees, the torque will be less.

Torque Accuracy: For AR15 barrel nuts, if you're aiming for 50 footpounds, a slight deviation (about 45 footpounds) due to angle won't significantly impact your build. It's important, but not critical, to be precise within this range.

Practical Example: The video provides a detailed demonstration with a Knights Armament barrel nut wrench, emphasizing that minor deviations in torque application are within acceptable specifications.
