Quick Tip: Using the SAC Modular Action Wrench

Follow
Brownells, Inc.

The folks at Short Action Customs have developed a strong, reliable, easytouse, Modular Action Wrench for bolt action rifles. Brownells Gun Tech™ Caleb Savant shares with us a few tricks to using it effectively. Before SAC came along, you had to have a dedicated action wrench for each type of rifle you worked on. SAC simplified that by offering a universal wrench body and interchangeable wrench heads. Once you acquire the body, you buy wrench heads ONLY for the rifles you work on. Maybe right now you work only on Remington 700s and Savages, so you need only those SAC wrench heads. When you get bitten by the bug to build a custom Mauser, you can pick up the Short Action Customs Mauser wrench head. Caleb demos assembling the SAC wrench. A threaded post screws into the wrench body, then you slide the wrench head over the post and lock it down with the included "bumper," which spaces the head so it will fully engage the lugs inside the action. Insert the whole shebang into the action until it stops, and the wrench head will be perfectly aligned with the action lugs. Clamp the barrel in a barrel vise and apply the necessary torque to the rear of the wrench body to separate the action and barrel.
