My favorite threads to hand quilt with are pearl cottons by Valdani size 12
I use the running stitch to do my modified big stitch
I do not use a hoop, but simply hold it in my lap.
I pin baste with my quilts laid out on my front room rug

I was saying it was the hand applique that made the diamond design show up, but it was the hand applique with the pearl cotton Valdani size 12 thread that made the printed design on the fabric pop.
