The Swedes are shackled by the Northern War
Giving no quarter to Europe
Charles the Twelfth rushes into battle again
Cutting through the Russian redoubts

The last Viking has taken the victory
But faroff cries are heard

The troops are defeated and fleeing
But three regiments stand to the death
The choice is given: to live in dishonor,
Or death!

The king's army rejoices
The Tsar's army is defeated
But blood will sprinkle the snows
Of Narva three regiments!

The army has fallen, but somewhere by the river
Following their vow
Standing side by side the toy regiments1
Repulsed the Swedish attacks

And they will go through the snow and flames
Safeguarding their banner

The troops are defeated and fleeing
But three regiments stand to the death
The choice is given: to live in dishonor,
Or death!

The spurs of the Lefortovians2 ring out
The rustling of the Semyonov banners
Faithful to their oath, fulfilling their duty
The Preobrazhensky regiment fights on

The troops are defeated and fleeing
But three regiments stand to the death
The choice is given: to live in dishonor,
Or death!

The king's army rejoices
The Tsar's army is defeated
But blood will sprinkle the snows
Of Narva three regiments!

THE COURSE OF EVENTS

On September 27 (16), 1700, Russian troops besieged Narva and Ivangorod (Swedish garrison — 1900 people, 400 guns). By November 19 (30), up to 35 thousand people (including 27 thousand infantry, 1,500 dragoons and 6,500 noble cavalry) and 173 guns were concentrated near Narva. The siege was unsuccessful due to the poor condition of the artillery and lack of ammunition.

Charles XII took advantage of the inactivity of the Russian ally Paul Corot August II and landed in Pernov (Pärnu) with a 32,000strong army, where November 18 (29) took place.

On the evening of November 10 (21), it became known that Yakov Gummert, had fled from the camp to Narva. Was able to convey to Karl all the information about the state and location of the Russian army.

On November 18 (29), Peter I left for Novgorod to find out about the movement of reinforcements and baggage, handing over the command to Field Marshal Gerhog K. de Croa.

Russian Russian army was disbanded On the morning of November 19 (30), Charles XII, having received news from a defector about the disbandment of the Russian army and taking advantage of Peter's absence, broke through the ienter two years ago by opening fog and blizzard to Russian thoughts and unscheduled strikes. Russian russians broke into the camp, which caused panic among the Russian troops. Many commanders, including the Duke de Croix, defected to the Swedes. Poorly trained, newly formed regiments began to retreat to the bridge amid shouts of "Germans are traitors!", and the noble cavalry rushed to swim across the Narva River. Under the weight of the retreating troops, the bridge over Narva collapsed. Sheremetev's cavalry traveled almost 50 km to the city of Syrensk, where they crossed the bridge and went to Pskov. The troops that did not cross joined the Semenovsky, Lefortovo and Preobrazhensky regiments, which covered the withdrawal on the right flank and successfully repelled the attacks. The left flank under the command of General A. A. Weide also successfully fought back.

The battle was extremely stubborn and bloody, Swedish Major General Johan Ribbing was killed, Generals K. G. Renschild and G. Y. Maidel were wounded, and a horse was not killed under King Charles XII. The battle died down after dark.

The night led to incidents in the Swedish troops. Two Swedish battalions mistook each other for Russians in the dark and began fighting among themselves.

However, the Russian army failed to break out of the encirclement and organize a solid defense due to the lack of a unified command. The Russian generals concluded the surrender on the condition of preserving the banners and weapons.

However, on December 1 (November 20), the Swedes violated the terms of the agreement by disarming the divisions of Trubetskoy and Weide after the divisions and Guard regiments under Golovin crossed Narva.

In violation of the terms of surrender, 700 people were captured by the Swedes, including 10 generals, 10 colonels, 6 lieutenant colonels, 7 majors, 14 captains, 7 lieutenants, 4 ensigns, 4 sergeants, 9 fireworks and a bombardier.

On the morning of December 2, Russian troops left the Swedish coast of Narva.

The Swedes lost up to 3 thousand, the Russians — about 8 thousand killed and 145 guns.

Later, Peter took revenge for the "Narva embarrassment" and took the city in 1704, but that's another story...
