Range of Movement Exercises After Breast Cancer Surgery

The Breast Cancer Physio

Have you just been through Breast Cancer Surgery and want more information on how to get moving? Then this video is for you! If you have recently had a lumpectomy or mastectomy this video shows you what exercises to perform to start regaining functional movement in the upper body.

Breast Cancer Surgery can leave you feeling quite tender through either your chest wall (mastectomy), your breast (lumpectomy) and / or your armpit (after axillary lymph node clearance).

I discuss the importance of why getting moving after Breast Cancer Surgery is so important, particularly regarding reducing risk of lymphoedema and improving tissue healing. So many people who have had lymph nodes removed due to Breast Cancer are frightened about triggering lymphoedema, and as a result often try to reduce movement of their arm.

However, the opposite is actually true the lymphatic system relies heavily on muscle contraction, movement and gravity to assist lymphatic flow, so getting yourself moving as soon as possible after surgery is a great way to assist your lymphatics and reduce your risk of lymphoedema.

I educate you on how often to perform these exercises, which body parts to focus on, but importantly also when to discuss any atypical symptoms (e.g. increasing pain or severe pain) with your Medical Team in case of post operative complications (e.g. DVT, seroma, infection).
