This could possibly be the world's rarest formation displays in the world, or at least over a Royal Air Force station; a Messerschmitt Me262, P51 Mustang, a Rolls Royce Spitfire and AB910 Spitfire of the Battle of Britain Memorial Flight (BBMF).

It is one thing having a P51 Mustang 413779 (WDC) or a Spitfire XIX owned by Rolls Royce (PS853) at RAF Coningsby, but to have a Messerschmitt Me262 (DIMTT) is just a rarity in its own right. And as if this wasn't enough, these all join into formation to display along with the RAFs own BBMF Spitfire AB910. What a sight, what a sound.

MESSERSCHMITT Me262 DIMTT
There are no original Me 262s flying in the world today, but five reproduction 262s were built in the USA in the 1990s and early 2000s, of which four are currently airworthy. Taking guidance from fragments of drawings and an original twoseater training aircraft, which was used as a model, all the parts for the reproduction 262s were made from scratch and no original components were installed. With the poor reliability of the original Jumo jet engines the decision was taken to fit modern jet engines to the Me 262 reproductions, which are powered by General Electric CJ610 turbojets, derived from the military J85, with around 2,500 lbs of thrust each. The new engines are concealed inside detailed reproductions of the original Jumo 004B engine shells and nacelles.

The Messerschmitt Foundation’s reproduction Me 262 (DIMTT) made its first flight on 15 August 2005 in Seattle, Washington, and after a brief period of testing and shakedown flying it was then dismantled, packed up and transported to its new home in Manching, Germany. After reassembly and ground tests, it flew from Manching for the first time on 25 April 2006, piloted by Horst Philipp. Reproduction Me 262 DIMTT is operated by Flugmuseum Messerschmitt and supported by the Airbus Heritage Flight.

P51 MUSTANG WDC
Built at the North American Aviation production line at Inglewood California in mid 1944 with the serial number 4473877.

Assigned to the USAAF from July 1945 – 1951. It then served with the Royal Canadian Air Force 403 ‘City of Calgary’ Squadron until April 1959 when it was retired.

WDC then passed into private ownership before undergoing a major restoration. It was then a regular on the airshow circuit carrying a number of markings. In April 2020 WDC took the colours of Col Donald Blakeslee, Commanding officer of the 4th Fighter Group, the Debden Eagles.
Colonel Blakeslee flew more combat missions than any other American fighter pilot, and stood credited with 15.5 confirmed kills. Blakeslee’s personal standing among Allied pilots was considerable. British ace Johnnie Johnson described him as “One of the best leaders ever to fight over Germany”.

ROLLS ROYCE SPITFIRE PR XIX PS853
Supermarine Spitfire PS853 was built at Southampton and delivered to the central Photographic Reconnaissance Unit at Benson on January 13th 1945. Sold to Rolls Royce PLC, Corporate Heritage Department, BristolFilton during September 1996.

SPITFIRE AB910
On the 19th August 1942, AB910 flew in one of the largest air battles of any war in history. Through fierce fighting, it flew four sorties over the English Channel in support of Operation Jubilee, an Alliedattack on the Germanoccupied port of Dieppe.

This monumental struggle saw the RAF lose 62 spitfires – more than in any other single day throughout WWII. AB910, however, survived unscathed and emerged victorious.

At just 20 years old, Flying Officer Eric Doorly was AB910’s regular pilot and flew three of AB910’s four sorties in support of Operation Jubilee. AB910’s third patrol that day
was piloted by Flight Sergeant ‘Dixie’ Alexander. It was Alexander who claimed a German Dornier Do 217, sending it crashing into a field south of Dieppe – AB910’s
sole kill of the war.
