RDG/SEPTA Push Pull

A look at the Reading's "PushPull" train. After the demise of most conventional equipment due to the purchase of Budd RDC's, the Reading retained 3 FP7's and 5 coaches. Desiring bidirectional capability, MU connections were run along the roofs of the cars so that both locos could be under power at the same time, allowing faster acceleration and better timekeeping. Special permission from the ICC was required before revenue operation was permitted. The set operated from the mid 1960's until the demise of ReadingPottsville service in 1981, then intermittently thereafter during SEPTA strikes. The set was repainted into SEPTA colors after a derailment at Norristown in January 1978.
