If you purchased a home in 2023, there is a very good chance you received a real estate tax proration credit on the day of your closing. This means the previous owner gave you the money for their portion of the property taxes during the time they owned the property. For many, this can be an especially confusing time of year when the new real estate property tax bills become available.

If you have your taxes escrowed into your mortgage, this won’t likely be an issue for you because the property taxes will be paid by your bank or lender. For those who don’t have taxes escrowed, you will very likely receive a tax bill soon that you will need to pay by the due date. If you live in Knox County Ohio, the very last day to pay your real estate tax bill is February 16th, 2024 but I recommend not waiting until the very last day due to the possibility of very long lines.
