so the idea is that we already run simulations of stuff, like video games are basically trying to simulate reality, most of the time. they have simulated gravity, physics and stuff. minecraft is a very basic simulation of our world. its a... well to put it plainly, bad model of our world, but as technology progresses, games like minecraft continue to get better. eventually we might get to a point where computers are so powerful, that they can eventually run a game so realistic its indistinguishable from real life. we're already running models of like, protein folding simulations and all kinds of stuff like that. what happens in 40 years when computers have gotten exponentially better/faster then they are right now? what happens when we get to the point where we can digitally recreate every neuron in a computer? if it really is a 1:1 simulation of our reality, how would it be any different from our reality?
