UNCLE CARS

As a suburban family car, the 2025 Ford Explorer SUV retains its function with a few minor external tweaks and some intriguing new technology. Eliminated from the lineup are the Base, Limited, King Ranch, and Timberline trim levels. (Replacement for the defunct Timberline may be a new, more rugged offroad vehicle.) The Explorer's 10speed automatic transmission, rear or allwheel drive, and twinturbo V6 and turbocharged fourcylinder engines are all still on the table. The Explorer's strong characteristics are its spacious cabin and thirdrow seating capacity, which make it ideal for families. Having a back seat available is reassuring, even if it isn't as comfortable as in some rival models. Active (the base model), STLine (an upgraded version), ST, and Platinum are the only available trim levels. Modifications to the front fascia include a redesigned grille, headlights, and lower air inlets; changes to the rear include new taillights. Not only can buyers of Platinum, ST, and STLine models now choose to have their roofs painted black, but they can also, and maybe most crucially, decide to have the BlueCruise handsfree driving system installed. An estimated price range for a 2025 Ford Explorer is $41,350–$57,100. This range is very variable and dependent on features and trim levels. We recommend the STLine as an alternative to the discontinued midrange Limited model for 2025. It keeps the aggressive styling and 300 hp turbo fourcylinder engine of the ST, but costs more than $11,000 less. It can tow 5,000 pounds, like Explorers with V6 engines, and comes standard with 20inch painted alloy wheels (the Active has 18s). It also has access to the optional Black painted roof and BlueCruise, which aren't available on the base Active. All three trim levels (Active, STLine, and Platinum) benefit from a 2.3liter turbocharged engine that produces 300 hp and 310 lbft of torque. The ST is powered by a 3.0liter V6 turbocharged engine that produces 400 horsepower and 415 poundfeet of torque. (Economic calculations are dependent on premium fuel.) While a 10speed automatic transmission and rearwheel drive are standard, allwheel drive is available as an option.
