Discouragement can be described as a paralysis of the soul or a reduction in one’s courage. It results when one tires to do something good, experiences failure, and then gives up entirely. The devil tempts us to it for he revels in preventing good. Discouragement disguises itself as compunction or humility, both of which effectively dispel it. Compunction is a sorrow for past sins. It looks closely at reality in order not to sin again. Yet discouragement looks to the future with unrealistic sweeping generalizations because it is chained by the past. Humility recognizes one’s limitations and God’s power, thereby avoiding rash action. Yet discouragement stems from pride which blocks God’s action in the soul. Remedies for discouragement include making an act of hope, trusting in God’s grace, having good friends, recalling past success, and frequent confession.
