A Permanent Resident (PR) card is required to provide proof that an individual is a permanent resident of Canada. If you ever need to leave the country for any reason to go abroad, you will need to present this walletsized card, which has been enhanced with all of the latest security features, upon your return to be allowed entrance back into Canada.
This video explains the renewal process. Most cards are valid for five years. In order to renew the card, it’s typically recommended that the applicant proves that he or she has been in Canada for a minimum of two out of five years. A list of all absences must be documented and sent to the Immigration authorities.
However, every case is unique. There are always variables to consider. If you fail to meet the residency requirements, there may be certain exceptions you can rely upon. Examples include timespent abroad working for a Canadian company or accompanying a spouse who is a Canadian resident.
If none of this applies, you may still be able to renew your Permanent Resident card for humanitarian or compassionate purposes, such as taking care of a sick relative abroad.
For a straightforward case, the card renewal process may take up to four months. It’s recommended that you begin the process at least six months in advance from the expiration date – especially if you feel that you do not have a straightforward case.
It is always a good idea to have legal consultation.
