In this video, I take a deep dive into the science of building muscle. I've seen lots of videos on this topic but they usually only focus on a few key elements: muscle damage, metabolic stress, and mechanical tension.

While these things are important, they don't provide the full picture. What about connective tissue hypertrophy? How about neural drive? What about muscle fibre types? Or angiogenesis?

I also want to explore these concepts more deeply. For example: how does the body know to respond in this way? What does mechanical tension actually do to the body, to result in greater strength and more muscle?

The science of building muscle is far more complicated than we give it credit for and there's actually an awful lot we don't know. That's not a bad thing! The mystery is what makes things fun and allows us to keep exploring and learning.

That said, we now know enough about the science of muscle that we can start to devise a more optimal strategy. Knowledge is power. And understanding this stuff and seeing it all sidebyside can be illuminating. Researching this stuff has pointed me in the direction of my next major shift in programming. Hopefully, it gives you some inspiration, too.
