Restoring a fortepiano for the Carl Bechstein Foundation. 13. Soaking the soundboard.

Edwin Beunk Fortepiano Collection

The soundboard had cracks and the glueing joints of all the parts are unreliable. The old boneglue had become brittle. Water solves the glue and all the parts come loose very clean when soaked in it. We hoped the dirt on the board would also solve but that wasn’t so easy…

Since 2019 the Carl Bechstein Foundation in Berlin is building up a collection of historical keyboard instruments, reflecting the history of the piano. All instruments will be in perfect playing condition and in this filmseries you'll see the whole proces of a restoration, starting from a total wreck. This fortepiano was built around 1795 in Vienna by Ferdinand Hofmann (17561829).

From this restoration film series are two versions, one with a German voiceover and this one with an English voiceover.
