Ottawa Nephrology

Dr. J. Brian Byrd is a physicianresearcher and cardiologist at the University of Michigan interested in hypertension and the effects of aldosterone, sodium, and potassium on health. He has recently completed the SALTY study, a randomized, crossover clinical trial that provided low (230 mg/day) and high (6,900 mg/day) sodium to healthy volunteers, in randomized sequence. The primary aim of SALTY is to identify changes in urinary extracellular vesicleshuttled mRNA caused by activation of the mineralocorticoid receptor. Additional aspects of sodiumrelated biology are also being evaluated in the SALTY study. Completed or planned aspects of SALTY include studies of urinary and circulating metabolites and proteomics.

Learning Objectives:
Increase understanding of the cardiorenal implications of sodiumaldosterone interactions
Increase understanding of contemporary approaches to mitigating cardiorenal damage from mineralocorticoids
