With the land of Rhûn introduced in season two of Rings of Power, McCreary found a new musical texture to separate the region from the rest of the lands of Middleearth; the Bulgarian women's choir. Along with the elegant, haunting vocals is the usage of an instrument called a gadulka, which acts as the driving instrument for the theme's propulsing ostinato. It's fascinating to see how far Bear pushes the soundtrack of The Rings of Power, and how it still feels cohesive and formfitting. Rhûn's theme conveys the desert region perfectly, yet there's an age and mystery to the vocals that tell of a land absorbed in its own history and time separate from the bindings of Middleearth. It also has enough of a villainous edge to support the Dark Wizard and his Gaudrim, with that gadulka ostinato giving them a dangerous, foreign sound that winds throughout their pursuit of the Stranger. It's a great new theme added to the Rings of Power registry, and the potential of where Bear could take it in the future make me even more excited.
