Tatari Ka Khawab
The Tartar’s Dream

کہیں سجاّدہ و عماّمہ رہزن
کہیں ترسا بچوں کی چشمِ بیباک


Kahin SajjadaoUmama Rahzan
Kahin Tarsa Bachon Ki ChashmeeBebaak!

Prayer‐mat and priestly turban have turned footpad,
With wanton boysʹ bold glances men are flattered;

ردائے دین و ملت پارہ پارہ
قبائے ملک و دولت چاک در چاک


Ridaye DeenoMillat Para Para
Qabaye MulkoDoulat Chaak Dar Chaak!

The Churchʹs mantle and the creed in shreds,
The robe of State and nation torn and tattered.


مرا ایماں تو ہے باقی و لیکن
نہ کھا جائے کہیں شعلے کو خاشاک


Mera Eiman To Hai BaqioLekin
Na Kha Jaye Kahin Shuale Ko Khashaak!

I cling to faith but may its spark not soon
Lie quenched under these rubbish‐heaps thick‐scattered!

ہوائے تُند کی موجوں میں محصور
سمر قند و بخارا کی کفِ خاک


HawaeTund Ki Moujon Mein Mehsoor
SamaroBukhara Ki KafeKhak!

Bokharaʹs humble dust and Samarkandʹs
The turbulent billows of many winds have battered.

بگردا گرد خود چندانکہ بینم
بلا انگشتری و من نگینم



“Bagar Da GardeKhud Chandan Ke Beenam
Bila AnghastarioMann Nageenam”

A gem set in a ring of misery
That circles me on every side, am I.*



یکایک ہل گئی خاکِ سمرقند
اُٹھا تیمور کی تربت سے اک نور


Yakayak Hil Gyi KhakeSamar Qand
Utha Taimoor Ki Turbat Se Ek Noor

Suddenly quivered the dust of Samarkand,
And from an ancient tomb a light shone, pure

شفق آمیز تھی اس کی سفیدی
صدا آئی کہ میں ہوں روحِ تیمور



Shafaq Amaiz Thi Uss Ki Safaidi
Sada Ayi Ke “Main Hun RooheTaimoor

As the first gleam of daybreak, and a voice
Was heard:—“I am the spirit of Timur!

اگر محصور ہیں مردانِ تاتار
نہیں اللہ کی تقدیر محصور



Agar Mehsoor Hain MardaneTatar
Nahin Allah Ki Taqdeer Mehsoor

Chains may hold fast the men of Tartary,
But Godʹs firm purposes no bonds endure

تقاضا زندگی کا کیا یہی ہے
کہ تورانی ہو تورانی سے مہجور


Taqaza Zindagi Ka Kya Yehi Hai
Ke Turani Ho Turani Se Mehjoor?

Is this what life holds—that Turaniaʹs peoples
All hope in one another must abjure?

خودی را سوز و تابے دیگرے دہ
جہاں را انقلابے دیگرے دہ


‘Khudi Ra SouzoTa Be Degare Dah
Jahan Ra Inqilabe Degare Dah”

Call in the soul of man a new fire to birth!
Cry a new revolution over the earth!”
