In this episode we travel around the South of Britain to see the best archaeology happening in 2022.
It's always been known that a major Roman road crossed the River Stort at Bishops Stortford but there’s never been any evidence of a Roman settlement there. Until recently the Hertfordshire town was thought to date back no further than the late Anglo Saxon period, but archaeologists preparing ground for a new leisure centre have discovered evidence of occupation that dates back many centuries earlier, to the Romans. Finds include military costume buckles, clasps and brooches, coins from every century of the Roman occupation, a temple, plus a very large burial site. All this, plus crop marks showing further evidence of large scale occupation, makes a strong case that the archaeologists have discovered a previously unknown Roman town.
