Note: A LEGAL ultralight is limited to 1 seat and requires no pilot certificate to fly. A 2seat "ultralight" is, in fact, a Light Sport Airplane and requires a pilot certificate to fly. There is no such thing as a "legal 2seat ultralight."

Rotax Engine Swap, Part 1
Hi, I'm Courtney.
I want to talk about my plans to upgrade my Rotax five oh three engine to a more powerful five eighty two
My airplane is a Quicksilver MXL2 that I built using the 52 horsepower Rotax five oh three.
It's a fine engine and I've no issues.
However, during the summer, due to high density altitude, it causes a noticeable power loss.
It also weighs into my decisionmaking when taking up passengers, too.
In addition, I like to fly at 8,000 to 10,000 feet above ground level.
It takes some time to get up there with the five oh three.
This helped me decide to upgrade to the 65horse power Rotax five eighty two engine.
I've already acquired one and plan to send it to a Rotax shop for an inspection, and if necessary, a rebuild.
When I built this airplane, I used TriState Kite Sales' engine undermount kit.
This kit relocates the normally topmounted engine to under the wing.
I'm really impressed with the undermount kit.
The new Rotax five eighty two will also be mounted under the wing using the same kit.
An area of concern is that my airplane has the Rotax “B" gear drive.
It will not work with this application,
so, I'll be looking for a "C" gear drive.
Lest you get confused, Quicksilver does mount some engines under the wing, however, the prop is driven by a drive shaft and a beltpulley drive system.
While adequate for early lowhorsepower engines, the introduction of the five oh three required Quicksilver to go from a 4 belt to a 5belt pulley.
My new engine is too powerful for a pulley system.
I will have to figure out a new radiator system as the Rotax five eighty two is water cooled.
It will take me a while to gather all the parts needed to complete the swap.
I will keep you uptodate with additional videos so you can follow along with my progress as I proceed and bring this project to completion!
I really appreciate you watching me.
And if you can, please support me at the Patreon link above or in the description section below!
I hope you learned something and I'll see you in the skies.
Bye.
