Running from a Deer in the Forest! Coming Face to Face with a Deer on the Mt Titiraupenga Track.

In this video I spot my first deer in the wild on the Mt Titiraupenga Track in the Pureora Forest Park! Being out on this track at the end of the Roar (hunting season), meeting this deer face to face on this New Zealand hiking trail was nervewracking. Although it was a female its size took me by surprise.

The deer quickly ran off into the forest but for the rest of my time on the track I kept checking ahead and behind for other deer, or worse... the barrel of any hunter's gun!

⬇ TRACK INFO:
Distance: 6.4km (return)
Time: 4 hours (return)
Start/End: Centre of the North Island carpark, Pureora Forest Park
Grade: Advanced
Dogs: With a DOC permit

⬇ THINGS TO KNOW:
The summit of Mt Titiraupenga is tapu (sacred or protected) by local Māori iwi. Respect cultural values by not climbing the summit rock. During The Roar (the NZ hunting season which runs from mid march to the end of April) the Pureora Forest Park is full of hunters and their prey (specifically deer and wild pigs). It's best to avoid the track during this time to avoid an unnecessary accident, but if you do venture into the Pureora Forest Park during the Roar protect yourself by wearing high visibility clothing and stick to the marked track.
