RussellZuhl [ http://russellzuhl.com'>http://russellzuhl.com ] has been furnishing the world market with the finest pieces of petrified wood for over 40 years. It was first to cut and polish large pieces and remains the leader in the very highest quality specimens available.

In this video, Ralph Thompson of RussellZuhl explains how he creates petrified wood furniture, wall hangings and polished specimens. To begin, he must find and unearth petrified wood logs, most of which are more than 200 million years old. The best petrified wood specimens comes from Arizona, Oregon and Washington.

Then he brings the logs back to his workshop to cut boards and rounds and begin the painstaking process of polishing each piece. Because it's primarily composed of quartz crystals, petrified wood is 7.8 on Mohs scale of mineral hardness, roughly the same as hardened steel, emerald, topaz and tungsten.

After a petrified wood slab has been polished, RussellZuhl will turn it into a piece of furniture or wall hanging for museums and fine homes and offices. Pieces are often mounted on a wood or metal bases to create a table or bench. Some are left as logs with polished ends, while the larger pieces are often hung on a wall to create a stunning impression.
