A rumble of excitement ran through military circles on June 2nd, 2024. The Vedler Army channel on Telegram, known for its coverage of Russian military hardware, released footage that could signal a shift in the ongoing artillery war in Ukraine. The grainy video, purportedly shot in Ukraine's Kharkiv region, depicted a previously unseen Russian selfpropelled howitzer the 2S43 Malva firing on Ukrainian positions. This sighting marked a potential turning point in the ongoing artillery war, offering a first glimpse of the Malva's combat effectiveness.
The war in Ukraine has been a brutal display of firepower, with artillery dictating the pace and shaping the frontlines. Both sides have heavily relied on longrange bombardments to soften enemy defenses, disrupt supply chains, and wear down troop morale. The Malva's arrival on the scene injects a new variable into this brutal equation, potentially offering the Russians a significant edge in firepower.
The Malva’s journey to the Ukrainian battlefield was a relatively swift one. According to Rostec, the Russian state corporation for advanced technologies, state tests for the Malva were completed in July 2023. Just a few months later, at the Army2023 international militarytechnical forum, a production agreement was signed, paving the way for mass production. By October 2023, Rostec confirmed the delivery of the first batch of Malvas to the Russian troops.
