Ryan Gosling Wants The Fall Guy Co-Star Emily Blunt to Direct a Western

While her husband, John Krasinski, has made the jump from actor to director, Emily Blunt has not yet made that career transition. If Blunt does decide to direct a motion picture, her The Fall Guy costar Ryan Gosling has shared that he wants her first movie to be a Western.

Speaking with CBR's Kevin Polowy to promote The Fall Guy, Blunt was asked if she would ever consider following in the footsteps of her character, firsttime director Jody Moreno, and becoming a director. "I will say, I don't know. That's a lot of pressure. I've seen what goes into directing a movie. I've seen how it's like your every waking moment of the day is devoted to directing a movie. It's like a wild horse in your house," she said. "So, I don't know. I'm making many excuses not to do it. I don't know how I'll feel in ten years. I'm not sure."

Gosling then interjected, stating that he thinks "she should direct" since she already "directed me on set" of The Fall Guy. He also revealed that he thinks her first directorial effort "should be a Western," although he did not elaborate further as to why he felt that would be the best genre for Blunt. This sparked a funny backandforth between the costars, with Gosling agreeing to star in Blunt's hypothetical first film, but only if he earned some serious "scratch." Blunt promised her costar that he would receive "a backend deal" on the Western but that there would be no frontend payment, meaning that if the movie bombed, Gosling would likely earn nothing on the picture.

The Fall Guy Updates a Classic '80s TV Show
Directed by David Leitch, The Fall Guy is an action comedy film loosely based on the 1980s television series of the same name about stunt performers moonlighting as bounty hunters. In the updated reimagining, Gosling stars as Colt Seavers, a stuntman working on his exgirlfriend's (Blunt) directorial debut action film, only to find himself involved in a conspiracy surrounding the film's missing lead actor (Aaron TaylorJohnson).

The Fall Guy premiered at SXSW 2024, where the movie earned rave reviews from critics in attendance, leading to an impressive Rotten Tomatoes score of 93%. While that number has since dropped to 85% certified fresh, it is still an impressive score for a summer blockbuster movie.

With The Fall Guy featuring the costars of last year's biggest box office hits (Barbie and Oppenheimer), Universal is no doubt hoping that audiences will flock to theaters to see Gosling and Blunt sharing the screen instead of competing for it. According to Deadline, The Fall Guy made $3.15 million in Thursday previews and is on track to earn between $35 and $40 million at the domestic box office during its opening weekend. While that's lower than usual for a movie opening the summer box office season, it's on par with its comp, Paramount's The Lost City, which opened to $30.4 million in March 2022.

The Fall Guy is currently playing in theaters.
