Embarking on an exhilarating adventure, we eagerly boarded an old steam locomotive at the Cape Town Harbour, bound for the charming Elgin Railway Market. Our decision to traverse the scenic route as you all know was fuelled by a deepseated fascination for the enchanting allure of historic trains and stations we encountered on our travels through South Africa. As the steam train chugged along, we marvelled at the authenticity of the experience, relishing each moment of the journey down memory lane. The rhythmic clatter of wheels on tracks, the nostalgic call of the whistle and the swaying all transported us back in time. The stations we passed, including a stop at Somerset West, all contributed to the magical ambiance. Crossing the iconic Sir Lowry’s Pass and venturing through a timehonoured tunnel dating back to 1912 added layers of historical charm to the expedition.
