In this video I show you what for me is the most effective man overboard recovery maneuver of all, it is certainly the simplest maneuver to perform the socalled "quick stop", advocated by the ORC (Ocean Racing Club) and now by the ISAF, and also by the RYA. Compared to that of the "decided bearing down" it has the advantage of keeping the boat in the immediate vicinity of the castaway and is feasible in all sailing conditions (with white sails) under spinnaker or gennaker which requires lowering first.
Obviously, like EVERYTHING concerning sailing, there are different schools of thought, but I am in complete agreement with Captain Giancarlo Basile, of whom I leave you an excerpt of his exhaustive speech on the subject below.

"I have experimented with this maneuver several times (recommended by ISAF) and I have written various articles about it on Bolina. In any case, everything can be perfected, experimenting with new maneuvers is always good, the important thing is not to ignore the problem like the vast majority does of today's sailors, and don't take for granted the maneuver requested by the examiners when taking the practical test for the nautical license: that is the worst possible!"

DISCLAIMER: this manoeuvre, although the best possible, at least as far as I know, is usually not accepted during the boat license exam (classic Italian nonsense) so if you have to take the license exam, inquire well before on which manoeuvre, the harbor master's office where you will take the exam requires.
Usually they make you do the wiliamson or the famous 8, which is good for motor boats because it serves to keep the propellers away from the man overboard.
Then you will realize for yourself, with experience, that this is by far the best one of all.
