Sailing the Red Squirrel - Jul 09 2024

The Red Squirrel is one of my two new boats this sailing season. It's a Byte CII that I purchased this past winter. It's a little boat, only 12 ft long, with a big red Mylar sail. It accelerates quickly and moves "squirrelly" on the water, hence the nickname!

It took me a few days to figure out how to rig the boat. When it came to me from Halifax, all the control lines were tangled up. And I couldn't find much info on the CII rig! Good thing I found an excellent rigging manual online written by Leszek Vincent for the MegaByte, which is the doublehander version of the Byte CII. Using that manual, I took all the lines apart and redid them.

The boat is light weight and super repsonsive! It has 4 main controls : the Cunningham, the vang, the outhaul, and the traveller car. I'm still learning how to handle the boat (this was my third time sailing it).

Ian Bruce, the designer of the boat, put together a series of videos on how to handle it:    / @bytecii9850
