On September 11, 1973, a military coup led by Army General Augusto Pinochet overthrew the socialist government of Salvador Allende, President of the Republic of Chile – democratically elected in late 1970 – establishing a military dictatorship, and Allende was killed in the Moneda Palace by putschist bombs.
