Sandpaper Globe

Material:
The globe has a sandpaper surface representing land and a smooth surface representing water
The wooden base holds the globe at a 23° angle, the same as the earth’s axis, in relation to the sun

Presentation:
Invite a child
Introduce the activity
Show the child how to handle the globe, two hands on the base.
Have the child carry the globe to the table
Let the child know that we have to sensitize our hands for this activity
Go to the counter to sensitize our hands
Go back to the table and sit down
Tell the child : If we have in the outer space far away and look down, we could see the earth like this,
Using the right hand turn the globe with the axis toward to left and the left hand feels the globe
Say to the child: the blue one/smooth representing the water and the sand paper part is representing the land
Feel the globe with your eyes close
Invite the child to feel and exploring the globe
When the child is done, have him put back the globe on the shelf
