Treatment for sarcoidosis generally starts with corticosteroids (such as Prednisolone / Prednisone). Not every patient with sarcoidosis needs treatment. Corticosteroids are a very effective treatment, but many patients are worried about side effects (such as developing diabetes or high blood pressure). In sarcoidosis, we generally need to treat the condition for a long time (12 months or more).
We can sometimes progressively reduce and stop corticosteroids after this period or replace them with another "steroidsparing drug", such as methotrexate, azathioprine or others.
Treatment in sarcoidosis is personalized in each case, because it is a complex disease. It is generally started if symptoms are very significant, there is involvement of vital organs such as the heart, or blood calcium levels are very high.
