Madoka Magica is another darkthemed anime from Gen Urobuchi, looking into the world of magical girls. Sayaka specifically is one of the most interesting cases; her wish driving her to mania, enough so to attack her own friends Madoka, Kyoko, and Homura. Spurred on by a former titan of the witch hunting world, Mami, she has a sense of justice that intertwines with her selfish wish for Kyosuke, created a downwards spiral that could only ever lead to a witch. While Madoka Magica may show the world changing struggles of others like Homura more, Sayaka is the tragic case of a normal girl.

Much like Urbouchi's other works, like PsychoPass or Fate/Zero, the anime explores dark themes and the downfall of its own characters and their ideals. Sayaka chases after the ideal image in her head of what her power should lead to in Mami, but as we come to see that picture never actually existed. This leads her to form a self serving cycle, lashing out against Kyoko and Homura for being the opposite of her "justice," eventually doing so against her best friend as well. And this isn't even mentioning Kyubay's role in their lives, forming contracts that were destined to fail in order to collect their energy. It's unexpected, which is one of the other hallmarks of Gen's works. Build the world up, and then break it down.
