Scandinavian scythe with an Austrian blade

Follow
Rob Stephens

Here I'm trying a couple of my versions of Nordic/Scandinavian 'overarm' types of scythe handles. I don't have any traditional Nordic blades so it's not the best test. Instead, I'm using an Austrian blade (65cm Zwei Rinder), which, in this case, happens to have a wide hafting angle closer to that of Nordic blades.
My take: I enjoyed using them. Locking one's arm in with this type of handle yields a more powerful stroke, good control of the blade and, if using highset handgrips, a wider swath too very effective, especially in open meadows. Utmerket / Jättebra!
