Think of a security deposit as an incentive to leave your apartment/house in good condition.

If you damage your unit beyond "normal wear and tear," then your landlord can use your deposit to cover that damage.

However, we often see cases where landlords wrongfully withhold the deposit or charge for their own business costs to clean up the place after a tenant moves out (i.e. normal wear and tear).

Texas law gives tenants a way to fight back when a landlord wrongfully eats the deposit.
