Diagnosing fuel trim on a hybrid is a little different than standard combustion engines. Bernie jumps right in and explains what to look out for and how to prepare for fuel trim testing on this hybrid Prius. Once ready, Bernie tests fuel trim using the ATS eSCAN as well as volumetric efficiency, both during a simple test drive. A linear lean condition is identified indicating more testing was needed. A 5 gas analyzer is used to determine the fuel control problem is not in the feedback control, but in the fuel delivery system. A fuel pressure, volume and specificity gravity test on the fuel in the vehicle all checks out. Leading us to the fuel injectors, using a 4channel scope the injectors are tested electrically for function and a flow rate issue is identified. Bernie takes it a step further and tests the faulty injectors flow rate on the bench to illustrate the difference in fuel flow. A real masterclass on diagnosing fuel trim in a real world situation.
