When planting organic corn or soybeans, seedbed preparation is one of the first jobs in the spring. In this video, several PFI farmers share knowledge on preplant tillage and planting of organic field crops. They talk about what tillage equipment to use, how they decide which passes to make and when to make those passes, including how to prepare fields coming out of corn, soybeans, or alfalfa and green manures like clover or cover crop mixes.
They also share advice on when to plant corn and soybeans for optimal weed control in organic systems, including the role that soil moisture and soil temperature play in crop emergence and competition against weeds.
