Seeing beauty – look beyond the ugly mess

Imperfect Paintings

When you see trash or ugly spots, try looking again expecting to see beauty. In artmaking this can be a useful habit as well. In this video I show how to open your eyes for beauty and have fun in a different way, when painting. It’s a new painting challenge as well. Care to join in on the fun? Details can be found below.

The video about the artwork on the wall behind me:    • EASY black & white – Seeing what you ...

Painting Challenge: Enlarge Detail
Submit your artwork on or before March 22, 2024.

The exercise is shown and explained in the video: Make a splash and:
#1 use a passepartout to look for an interesting spot – take a picture.
#2 take a new sheet and enlarge the found detail, or paint a mirrored version, a negative or whatever – take a picture
#3 take pictures of your palette or other thing you used that look interesting.
#4 in case you’re up for an extra challenge, look for a nice detail in your second painting – take a picture – and make a third painting.

Do know this: all is good. You’re free to choose your art materials, size, color, the art tools you use or whatever. Complicated or simple, make the required or even more paintings, just surprise me. Whatever you do: enjoy the magic of making art and remember: create to express, not to impress. So any artistic level is okay. Be you and have fun making it.

IMPORTANT: Also mail me your first name and the country you live in, so I can put them next to your artwork in the video. I appreciate it very much when you also send me a line or two about what you experienced while making your artwork. How was it to paint using different or odd looking color combinations? Or using other materials? Work in a different way? Did you learn anything, enjoyed playing like this or ran into trouble? I just love to hear from you. Please submit your artwork on or before March 22, 2024. Just take your phone and snap a picture looking straight down at your artwork, preferably using daylight, but no direct sunlight on it. Remember: don’t forget to have fun. It’s playtime.

Materials
The art materials I use in the videos are not sponsored.
I prefer to work on multipurpose paper, more info in this video:    • How to choose the RIGHT paper for you...
In almost all my videos I use with Winsor&Newton Galeria acrylics, if not, I will say so in the video.
Other materials I use are in random order: 5, 10 and 40mm brushes, palette knives, acrylics medium, Ecoline liquid watercolor, Lyra color pencils, Lyra soft pastels, oil pastels, Stabilo color pencils, paper palette pad and basic masking tape. I also use household items like a permanent marker, scrub sponge, scissors, paper towel, and so on.
