Sharpe was born on June 26, 1968 in Chicago, Illinois, and grew up in Glennville, Georgia. His parents separated when he was three months old, and his father died when he was a teenager. He was raised by his grandmother Mary Porter, who took care of several other relatives as well. He had a lisp that affected his reading abilities, and he struggled academically. He excelled in sports, especially football, basketball, and track and field. He followed his older brother Sterling Sharpe, who also became an NFL star, to play football at Savannah State University.
