Morning fishing run off Oahu Hawaii fishing in Mamala bay.
I launched about 15 minutes prior to sunrise to make the 20 minute run out to search for bait. I am trying to catch opelu, which is a type of mackerel that all pelagic species love.
After about an hour and 2 miles of no luck in marking bait schools I was able to catch 2 opelu by trolling. Around 20 minutes later I picked up two more opelu.
Not wanting to waste too much time catching bait I headed to the ledge, which is where it drops from around 150ft to 250ft. The first two baits died. The third opelu got hit but it took my bait. Feeling rather discouraged at this point I put on my final bait hoping to hook up. With the bait out I marked another school of bait and picked up a jumbo opelu. 5 minutes later I hooked into a 25lb shibi (yellow fin tuna) at 10:05 am.
With my final bait I got hit but I think my drag was too tight, which caused a ono (wahoo) to bite it in half.
Overall great morning of fishing. It was my second time filming and I think it is 10 times better than my first video.
