Short head of biceps | Sports massage for the hamstrings

The biceps femoris is part of the many tissues that make up the hamstring group. The short head of the biceps, which is our focus for this video, plays a crucial role in knee flexion. It has a beautiful trigger point that can interact with the biomechanics of the knee much like popliteus. And like popliteus, trigger points in the short head of biceps are often overlooked.

Eagleeyed viewers will remember in my Stu's Corner on ITB pain I called out the short head of biceps as a potential mimic of ITB pain:    • What mimics ITB syndrome? | Stu's Corner

This treatment sequence is part of the Knee Pain Masterclass. Accessing the short head of biceps means lifting the leg up to soften the tissue and pushing the bulk of the biceps femoris tissue out of the way before sinking down into the short head tissue itself.

Remember: pressure and comfort for your client is of upmost importance when treating this muscle and its trigger point. A slow approach using your forearm will not only allow you to control the application of pressure more accurately, its also is a more sustainable approach for you.

I recently treated a longterm client of mine who came in complaining of many of the classic indicators of iliotibial band syndrome one of which being lateral knee pain, the other being this client's long history of ITB pain in the past.

We all know there's no single test for ITB pain, which makes this client an ideal example of what indicators you can look for to confirm if the client's dysfunction is actually ITB syndrome or something else altogether. In this case, the real culprit turned out to be the short head of the biceps femoris, which mimics ITB pain just beautifully.
