Does it make sense to buy airline frequent flyer miles or hotel points?

It depends. You need to run the numbers and see if it's worth it to buy miles/points.

Step 1. Check the cash price of the hotel/flight

Step 2. Check how many points/miles it's going to cost for the hotel/flight

Step 3. Check how much it's going to cost to purchase the points/miles needed

Compare options 1 and 3 and pick whichever one will cost less money

Tip: most miles and points purchases are processed by Points.com which will code as misc. so you won't earn airline miles or hotel points from purchasing points.
