The short answer is it depends. Travel insurance can cover financial losses associated with traveling in general, either domestically or internationally. Here’s a few examples of what it can cover

➡ If you need to cancel your trip, due to losing your job, a natural disaster at the destination, a pilot strike or the airline going bankrupt
➡ If you have a ‘change of heart’ and no longer want to go on your trip (you’d likely need to purchase insurance specifically to cover this option, and it would likely only get you 5075% of your trip cost back)
➡ Traveling mishaps like a missed airline connections or delayed and lost luggage

There’s also travel medical insurance, that specifically covers certain medical costs that could come up while traveling. Here’s a few examples of what it can cover

➡ Emergency hospital costs
➡ Prescription medication costs
➡ Air ambulance rides

Overall, we personally don’t pay for travel insurance instead, we have a travel credit card that offers trip cancellation and trip interruption insurance. We ALWAYS pay for travel medical insurance, because you can’t predict medical emergencies, and the potential costs if you don’t have insurance could be very high.
