A basic distillation of purple dye and water is carried out. The solution is heated using a bunsen burner and then the steam condenses forming much purer water in the final round bottom flask. Distillation is a good separation technique to separate substances based on boiling points. The substance with the lower boiling point will produce more vapor and this vapor is isolated as it condenses.
