Simulating Helicopter Flight Using an Arcade Motion Platform (2004-2005)

An MEng student project undertaken in 2005, based on a previous RAFsponsored project to address Virtual Reality and the training of Helicopter Voice Marshals. Voice marshalling involves the provision of verbal flight commands by a reardoor crewman to the pilot, based on their safety observations through the open cabin door of the helicopter. This project sought to link the flight visuals of a simulated helicopter mission to the motion of an S2e Venturer arcade platform, kindly supplied to the University by AI Group of Wolverhampton. The motion platform simulation was based on real data recorded using a Gyrocube 3A sensor module (the focus of a 2004 student project), flown on a Eurocopter EC120B, owned by Coventry Heli Centre. Realtime 3D graphics and sound effects were simulated using Microsoft Flight Simulator 2004.
