On July 28, 1945, Ise was hit by a direct bombardment from an air raid by U.S. warshipborne aircraft and was heavily damaged, landing on the bottom of the ship tilted 15 degrees to starboard. After the air raid, Ise's second turret was still loaded with Type 3 ammunition, and there was a fear of an outburst, so it was fired. The firing of the main gun at this time was, oddly enough, the last firing of a largecaliber gun by an IJN battleship.
