Late Thursday, the Texas Supreme Court issued a stay of execution for an East Texas man who has maintained his innocence for over two decades.

That order came hours after Robert Roberson was set to be executed on Thursday night amid a thundering chorus of people who believed the state was about to kill an innocent man, and who hoped lastditch measures would buy him more time.
