Learning how to move from sitting to standing is a task itself, especially for knee injuries, postsurgically and for the elderly or frail. In Physio we like to use a split stance to help improve the sit to stand ability, have less reliance on the arms and provide a more efficient and comfortable way of standing up from a chair. We then use this at home for patients to practice to actually strengthen their legs and knees in this position as it can be done every time they move in and out of a chair, bed or sofa.
Once there is enough strength to do this you can progress the exercise to one leg eccentric and then single leg sit to stands which are part of the ACL RTS program.
1⃣ Split stance sit to stand
2⃣ Sit to stand 1 leg eccentric
3⃣ Single leg sit to stand
