What is skin cancer? Skin cancer is the uncontrolled growth of abnormal skin cells, which can develop into tumors. These tumors can be benign (which means noncancerous) or malignant (or cancerous). Skin cancer typically develops in the epidermis, which is the outermost layer of skin, which makes it easier to detect in its early stages. But not all skin cancers are the same; there are three main types, each originating from different types of skin cells and having unique characteristics. These 3 types are basal cell carcinoma (BCC), squamous cell carcinoma (SCC), and melanoma.
