The sloop was a vessel tailored perfectly for the Caribbean. It was built for speed, yet it never sacrificed its cargo capacity, making it perfect both for merchants, and for pirates. It could sail up shallow waters, reefs, swamps and rivers, allowing the sloop to hide, pursue, flee. Everything you need for a getrichquickscheme. It required a small crew to handle, as little as five men, but pirates could easily overcrowd them with up to 90 men, meaning less work for everyone, and a numerical advantage in combat.
