Tarikh Episode 684

In this episode Nikhil talks about The Amindivi Islands, nestled off the coast of Kerala, India, have long been a haven for seafarers, explorers, and pirates. Rich in fine coir, these islands were prized for their valuable resources but were also vulnerable to plunder. However, amidst their idyllic beauty, a dark event stains their history—the 16thcentury massacre of defenceless islanders by colonial Portuguese forces.
This savage atrocity, etched in the annals of island lore, is immortalized in the legend of the 'Serpent Mosque,' known as Pambu Palli, located on Amindivi Island. Amidst the tranquil waters of the Lakshadweep archipelago, Amindivi Island serves as the epicenter of this tale, dating back to the 16th century when Portuguese ambitions in the Malabar, Cochin, and Goa regions were at their zenith.
Of particular interest to the Portuguese was the coir produced on these islands, essential for rigging and repairing their ships. Trouble began when the Portuguese declared the islands as part of their dominion, imposing heavy tributes and disrupting local trade. This oppression sparked a daring resistance, led by a cunning strategist from Purakkad, known as 'Kadanthavanjiraka' or 'Kathiltanjakkaran.'
Through guile and deception, the strategist orchestrated a daring plot, poisoning the Portuguese garrison during a banquet. The retaliatory massacre that followed claimed hundreds of islanders' lives, including prominent figures like the Qazi and the brave woman, Omanapoo, who led the resistance with sticks and stones.
The legend of the Serpent Mosque, emerging from this tumultuous period, remains shrouded in myth and history. It stands as a silent testament to the islanders' resilience and defiance against colonial oppression. Today, the Pambu Palli serves as a solemn reminder of the sacrifices made in the struggle for freedom.
