St Martins hospital was initially known as The Borough Lunatic Asylum. Built in 1902, Canterbury was one of the smallest English county boroughs to construct its own asylum, with approximately 250 beds compared to over 2000 in other asylums. After the 1st World War, it became known as Canterbury city mental hospital and was named after the local church of St Martins after the Second World War.
