Master’s Degree in Theology, Ministry, Pastoral Care, Leadership etc.

Get Trained CPE (Clinical Pastoral Education)
Most Full Time (clinical) Positions Require 4 Units

Get Prepared (prepare your resume)

Get Connected Go to ACPE.EDU Learn about support, certifications and other events/conferences

So you Wanna Be A Chaplain? | Clinical Chaplain
Volunteer
If you are not looking to go back to school to pursue your Master’s degree you could opt to serve as a volunteer at your local nursing home or assisted living facility. It’s a plus if you come with ministry experience and have learned proper bedside manners and etiquette for visiting the sick. Of course, this option would be completely up to the Administrators or Director of the institution you are interested in working at. Background checks will be required.

In either case, I would highly suggest you take AT MINIMUM ONE UNIT of CPE (Go to ACPE.edu)

While completing your CPE Unit start applying for opportunities and reaching out to places you are interested in.

Not all organizations require CPE Units however, it provide you with a great experience. Check with the organization or entity you are interested in working with 1st. ( For Example Military and correctional facilities have different requirements do your research)

Education: To work as a hospital chaplain you must have a Master’s Degree ( Master’s of Divinity) or be currently enrolled in an accredited institution.

Find a CPE Program near you, talk with the supervisor and share your interest, and complete the necessary application. Next, pass the interview and complete your CPE Program.

As you are nearing the end of your program you want to start applying to chaplaincy positions. Be aware you may need to relocate to get the experience you need or be willing to work in a PRN position.
